OVERLOOKED

Everyday we walk past thousands of surfaces without really seeing them. Rusted signs. Peeling posters. Chipped paints. Weathered walls. Scored dumpsters. Crumbling tiles. The skin of the city is forever exposed, constantly adding and shedding new layers.

 It’s alive! And yet we tend to dismiss it all as background.

DISCOVERED

All these prints are of real surfaces, discovered and photographed on ordinary streets over the past 20 years. Many are from downtown Toronto, and some are from years of visits to Medellin, Colombia. 

Nothing is staged, painted or digitally fabricated. These accidental compositions are the urban artifacts of weather, time, chance, human activity and entropy—countless forces collaborating without intention.

IMAGINED

Lifted out of their contexts, these familiar surfaces become a canvas for our minds to paint  dreamy landscapes, strange scenes and fascinating forms. Like reading shapes the clouds, there are no wrong answers.

Many of these photographs present very different compositions when rotated to different orientations. Which way is up? See for yourself! The Interactive Photo Grid is an invitation to do just that. 

RETURN

Practicing this way of seeing has permanently changed how I walk through the world. My hope is that when you walk out of this exhibition, the city looks different. It crackles with potential. And the next time some peculiar flash of visual detail calls out to you above the din of the background noise - stop and follow your curiosity. 

Eventually, the city becomes an endless gallery of muddles and masterpieces, with you as its personal curator.
