OVERLOOKED

Everyday we walk past thousands of surfaces without really seeing them. Spilled paints. Peeled posters. Rusted dumpsters. Crumbling tiles. The skin of the city is forever exposed and unfinished, constantly adding and shedding layers.

It’s alive! And yet we tend to dismiss it as background. Or as a blemish.

DISCOVERED

All these prints are photographs of ordinary surfaces, discovered and on ordinary streets over my past 20 years as a photographer. Many are from downtown Toronto, some are from Muskoka, and others are from years of visits to Medellin, Colombia.

Nothing is staged, painted or digitally fabricated. These accidental compositions are the urban artifacts of weather, time, chance, human activity and entropy—countless mysterious forces collaborating without intention.

IMAGINED

Lifted out of their contexts, these familiar surfaces become a canvas on which our minds will paint – dreamy landscapes, fascinating forms and strange scenes emerge. Like reading shapes the clouds, there are no wrong answers. There’s only what you notice.

racticing this way of seeing has permanently changed how I walk through the world. My hope is that when you walk out of this exhibition, the city feels different – it crackles with potential. And when a peculiar flash of visual detail calls out to you above the din of the background noise - you stop... and follow your curiosity.

The city becomes an endless gallery of muddles and masterpieces, with you as its wide-eyed curator..
